After 25 years, I cancelled my subscription to @TheEconomist because on September 5 they charged my card CA$484.68 renewal fee without authorization & after admitting this was illegal, they refused to offer me the best price on the market to continue being a customer.

@ambermac Willingness of gov or gov concession business (banking, Telco in CDN) employees to pay extra taxes may be useful virtue signalling but it is not the point is it? If you over tax investment gains you kill investment, productivity: the part of the tax base that keeps the gov afloat

I suspect this sentiment is more common than we hear. As someone who grew up among many family members who struggled financially, I am more than happy to be in a position now where if I pay a little more it can be helpful to those who can't. This shouldn't be hugely controversial...as my friend @mohamadfakih8 says, it's just kinder capitalism 🇨🇦.

I am a physician and I am married to a physician. We will never have to worry about paying off our mortgage, making car payments or affording food. If the changes in capital gains means we pay more tax so that social programs are more economically viable, we’re OK with that

Hot takes on what Toronto needs to be a viable tech ecosystem: - way more tech events after hours. this is part of what makes sf special. New demos, 535, and Vclub are great starts to recurring events but need more - startups need to raise more and hire less. Focus on paying more, increase talent density, import from the US or retain great CDN talent. Raise and charge USD, pay high CAD salaries that give competitive QoL - VCs need to push startups to build for scalability and ambition, not early revenue/markups. Building community/networks/ecosystem/platforms are defensible moats that accrue tons of value but take time to build. Early revenue CAN be bad if it’s too early a focus - Product design. Canadian startups largely haven’t learned that product design and brand design gives tremendous leverage. One designer can make your co look 10x the size and calibre, attracting larger customers, better talent, and capital - IMO we need CDN tech to consolidate in Toronto. Too small a national ecosystem to be split across wide geography. Push everyone to be 15 mins or less from the entertainment district. Will allow for more talent cross pollination - More back to the office. Not every day, but we need more grit in our tech ecosystem to create large outcomes for everyone. 1-2days/week IMO is the right average. - global warming to make Toronto more livable in winters. This one seems taken care of already. (This is a partial joke) - we need to admit that TO is *far* behind. Building here is not advantageous for most venture backed CO’s. it is a complicated trade off of pro’s and cons. TO could get there, but first step of solving problems is acknowledging they are there. Biggest thing in my eyes is talent - need to retain the talent we produce, turn those early wins into talent that is recycled into the ecosystem. Key to a lot of this is focusing on density IMO. For most part we do not build great software products imo, we build sales driven orgs that don’t hit scale and later get competed away - lastly, on culture, we need to get comfortable with departing from Canadian normality. To be Canadian is to be comfortable, not great. We are never #1, we’re nice. We have a tighter normal distribution of wealth and outcomes which promotes equality but discourages long tail outcomes. I love living in Canada, because of this, but don’t like working here. This focus on being comfortable is in pure opposition to the VC driven model of tech. VC is driven by tails, not normal distribution outcomes. To build here we need to get comfortable with not being nice, playing to win, and working really *really* hard. It’s not muskoka chairs, it’s late nights and weekends. We’re nice and we’re comfortable. Startups are not. We need our startups to get comfortable with leaving our identities at home, and being more blunt/aggressive about the realities of hard work at the office. Or, Canada needs to admit it’s a tech ecosystem not driven by venture. That’s cool too and would work. But it’s a different game with different focuses and outcomes, and we should be comfortable with that. Touting venture backed startups as our North Star without changing the culture does not align and leads to middling outcomes. Go 🇨🇦
