My question about taxes on used cars was was genuine, and the answer was revealing. I've never paid taxes on a used car in Alberta because I always buy them privately. I've done too many transactions to even count (cars, boats, sled, ATVs, trailers). I assumed every province was similar. Boy was I wrong. I put together this chart. GST is actually exempt from private sales, but most provinces capture it at the time of registration, especially those with a harmonized sales tax. That's crooked. Even more crooked is the fact that some provinces charge taxes at the time of registration, not on what the buyer paid for the car, but what the province believes its worth. Again, Alberta stands out from the other provinces. We bitch about car insurance, but our overall cost of ownership is lower than everyone else.

PS: Please note the above uses "obvious weakness", not "fatal flaw". If you can see a way round the Catch-22 situation that's fine by me*, i'd be happy to hear it as well. But I've seen too many large Cu projects "peak at PFS" and this looks like another *but not "Chinese money"
