Alcohol is making you fat So many clients come to us and say they can't lose weight even though their diet is "on point" 9 times out of 10, when I dig into their actual diet, they're drinking way too much alcohol The truth is alcohol is killing your progress. Even a few drinks per week can undo hours of meal prepping and gym time Here's why you should cut it out completely (bookmark this): 1. Empty calories First one is obvious but alcohol has zero nutritional value. It's chock full of empty nothing calories. And a heavy beer can or cocktail be 300 calories or more. Drinking 3 per week? That's almost 1k extra calories. Which equals over a pound of fat every month you're packing on (do the math: 12 pounds per year, 50+ pounds in five years...and we wonder why there are so many beer-gutted 40 year old dudes walking around). 2. Alcohol slows down your metabolism Your body doesn't treat alochol as a nutrient. It treats it as a toxin. When you drink, your liver prioritizes metabolizing this toxin over everything else you consume. This means your body puts regular calorie burning on the back burner. Not to mention alcohol consumption can drop your body's fat oxidation (the process of burning fat for energy) by more than 70%. Not to mention FURTHER that alcohol consumption messes with your body's insulin response. This leads to fluctuations in blood sugar levels, promoting fat storage and increasing hunger 3. Your muscles can't recover You want to get lean AND yoked right? Well alcohol is making that 10x more difficult. It interferes with and slows down protein synthesis (ie how your muscles get bigger). 4. Your testosterone levels go down Alcohol messes with your balls, specifically the Leydig cells, which is where testosterone is created. Studies have consistently found that moderate to heavy alcohol consumption results in reduced testosterone levels in the blood. 5. Dehydration effects Alcohol is a powerful diuretic. Which means it makes you dehydrated. Dehydration is going to make everything else you do worse. It's a performance killer. Worse workouts. Less stamina. Worse recovery. String together a bunch of dehydrated workouts in a row and you've basically wasted your time. 6. Poor judgement Alcohol impairs your decision making. Be honest. When you have a few drinks, how much more likely are you to also have a late night burrito? How much more likely are you to also stay up way too late playing video games/watching TV? The first bad decision (drinking) often leads to several others that kill your progress. 7. Sleep quality You may find it easy to fall asleep if you "pass out" after a few drinks. But it's not the good, restorative sleep your body needs. It's trash sleep. Your body is focused on metabolizing this poison you've fed it. You spend less time in REM, and wake up feeling ... no sh*t.... foggy headed and terrible. This is just the tip of the iceberg. I'll write more about how much of a progress-killer alcohol is later.
