It is surprising that Governor Seyi Makinde chose to organize what appeared to be a public reception, complete with cameras and seating arrangements, for people who had just regained their freedom after spending 56 days in captivity. After such a traumatic ordeal, the immediate priority should be the victims’ health and well-being, not a public event. They deserve urgent medical attention, psychological support, rest, and the opportunity to reunite with their families in private. The security personnel who ensured the victims were taken to the hospital first set the right example. Their focus was on the victims’ recovery and welfare, which should always come before any public celebration or media appearance. There will always be time for official receptions or public acknowledgements, but the first responsibility is to ensure that those rescued are physically and emotionally fit before exposing them to public ceremonies.
