@SarahShoker @Joana_Cook Definitely agree, this certainly was an underresearched topic when I started my research in 2015! There has certainly been more attention to this topic and very useful insights that can help shape and improve future peacebuilding programmes.

@MichanneSt @Joana_Cook Cannot emphasize how much we need this volume in the field!Haven’t worked on this issue in a while, but when I was doing work on DDR in 2015, there was scant work using gender analysis (but plenty on female combatants 🤔). Can’t wait to read this!

@tobias_pietz My worry with calling the DDR in Liberia too inclusive is that restricted criteria exclude those who need the support from DDR the most, e.g. because they are young, vulnerable, have suffered trauma, have lost families, were forced recruited, or are dependent on commanders.

@tobias_pietz I actually spoke with many adult female ex-combatants and particularly girl ex-combatants who were excluded from the programme, frequently by UN officials at the disarmament sites, but also by commanders and their own families.

@tobias_pietz I didn't do a deep-dive on the all-female unit per se, so I can't say if it actually increased applications. The broader post-conflict environment and insecurity did contribute to an increase in applications from women

@LeenaVastapuu Thanks, Leena, looking forward to hearing what you think! I actually managed to draw on your research, very fascinating and a lot rings true with what I found!

@MichanneSt Congratulations. This area is often overlooked. I'm going to get a copy.

How do female combatants experience war and 'post-war' as modulated by DDR programs? @MichanneSt provides an insightful comparative perspective from Liberia and Nepal in this book👇

While I am at it with the self-promotion, some of the research on political reintegration was published (bit.ly/3sLBZjt) and a working paper/policy brief was published in the LSE Women, Peace and Security Working Paper Series @LSE_WPS (bit.ly/3oSR8OZ). 9/9

It has certainly been a long journey but very worthwhile now that I can finally share these stories with a broader audience. It is so important that these stories are shared! 8/9
