Hi there, thank you for sharing your perspective! Microchip has steadily advanced its on‑chip logic capabilities across both the PIC and AVR product families over many years, with CLC on PIC devices and CCL on AVR devices. The newer Configurable Logic Block (CLB) builds on this established foundation rather than starting from scratch. The CLB is not intended to replace a full FPGA; instead, it is positioned as a CPLD‑class, ultra‑low‑power, deterministic logic fabric that is tightly integrated with the MCU. It currently scales from 32 Basic Logic Elements (BLEs) in the PIC16F132 to 128 BLEs in the PIC18 Q35. This reflects a different era with different design priorities. Today’s focus is on secure, low‑power, and cost‑optimized embedded systems, where small, always‑on hardware logic can deliver significant value.

@cnxsoft @MicrochipTech ATMEL had a MCU with FPGA a decade ago! Microchip then killed that and only now are getting into logic gates in MCU - somewhat sad.

8-bit microcontrollers with CPLD-like programmable logic. cnx-software.com/2026/04/23/mic… @MicrochipTech PIC16F132 and PIC18-Q35 combine 8-bit cores with Configurable Logic Blocks (CLB), namely 32 and 128 Basic Logic Elements (BLEs). The MCUs also integrate security and voltage management features, Multi-Voltage I/O (MVIO), and more. The microcontrollers are supported by Microchip’s MPLAB X IDE, and the company offers the $10 PIC16F13276 Curiosity Nano and PIC18F56Q35 Curiosity Nano Evaluation Kits to get started.
