Had a simple weekend. Just one league match which finished early.
1st Inn the team bowled their 45 overs quickly, 2h25 (25 min early!) One plumb LBW torker and also a batter stood on his stumps on all three.
150 target was chased in 31 overs, in 1h45.
All very well behaved.
One bowler repeatedly over stepping (9 no balls in 7 overs).
Also, too many fielders out side the ring on occasion. They asked the question, but the ball was bowled before I could answer. They blamed me on their mistake.
I think the clue was me counting with my had out 4 times
This week, I only had 2 matches!
Neither were close nor difficult.
1st Inning 1st wicket at 179 with the overs including 114 off 68 balls.
2nd innings 145 all out!
It was a high pressure match for the players and officials alike.
We also had the only discipline issue by umpires in out league. It was dissent by a batter but not disputed by anyone after the report.
The home club had site screens for the 1st time. One fell over as we began!
I missed my update last week. I had to wait for the end of a discipline case.
It was the end of a long week, follow my updates on the 6th I continued with another 3 matches, thus 6 in 8 days.
The league match last week was won by 1 run!! Including a run out of the last ball.
Just for clarification, I AM NOT, or even considering , returning to umpiring. Done, dusted, done my bit, please stop asking about the smallest of chances.
@DanielsDeanJ I've worked on my movement at the potential run outs. I was glad I did, the last wicket was a run out -just.
Used radios, always learning their use. They worked well.
Also managed the weather well. Had quick discussion about rain, said wait an over. It eased after 2 balls!
I've just completed my first weekend of the season with 4 matches done.
Saturday was a close T20 with a 14 run victory. An enjoyable match in the sun with a great crowd. Only had the issue that 17" lines were missed as one end so had to judge it myself without any complaints.
They were 16 overs. The 1st semi was one sided with 61 chased in 4.1 ov. The 2nd was closer with 18 balls to spare.
The final seemed the chase was nailed on until the the last 7 wicket fell for 9 runs in 25 balls and fell 13 runs short!
No issues today, a simple start to 2024
Sunday was Womens Grand Slam. With 3 umpires for 3 matches we had 4 innings each. I stood in one semi, one innings of the other Semi and one in the Final.
The players were please to umpire.
Started in Sun, had rain (but continued) and then finished in the Sun.
We'd also like to add what a cracking bunch the @CrowhurstParkCC lads are. A huge effort from 22 players and officials to #getthegameon.
Despite an hour journey home most of them were still at the club gone 8pm!
Best of luck in your final game next week 😉
(A little late) Story of the Day...
✅ 1s beat Crowhurst Park by 32 runs
✅ 2s beat Ram by 3 wkts
❌ 3s lost to Birdham by 8 wkts
🌧 4s abandoned

I managed to get a match in at the 4th attempt.
1. Had wet area in the outfield. It was marked out & treated as a tree
2. Batter didn't put his bat past the crease: one run short
3. Has to remind a batter to stay off the protected area when running: he was ball watching!
I got the phone call that my match had fallen to the rain.
I had just made it out of the door, but hadn't closed it when the call came.
Not sure if many matches will be completed in Sussex today. (60% already confirmed as off)
I managed to get one pre-season match (out of 3).
As with over half the matches in Sussex my Cup match was postponed. I was glad I was informed on Friday evening which gave me a chance to watch my club's 1st league match of the season.
Come on the Sun.☀️
