#OnThisDay May 22 1888: Minneapolis architect LeRoy Buffington receives a patent for the "Cloudscraper", an iron-framed office tower. Even though later builders used his idea to create skyscrapers, Buffington was unsuccessful in collecting royalties and became largely forgotten.

The March 1969 National Geographic article, "Wisconsin's Door Peninsula: A Kingdom So Delicious" is one of the most beautiful love letters written to a Midwestern destination. I recommend getting the entire 1969 volume. Every single issue is a keeper.

This panoramic view highlights the genius of the 1909 Plan of Chicago. Architect Daniel Burnham famously declared that the "lakefront by right belongs to the people".
He fought to ensure that private interests would not block the public from enjoying the water. Look closely at the shoreline; almost the entire expanse is a continuous playground of green parks, harbors, and paths.
Burnham envisioned a "Paris on the Prairie". Seeing how the massive skyscrapers are kept perfectly balanced by wide-open civic spaces proves his green footprint still protects the heart of the Windy City today.

Lane Technical High School in Chicago, located at Western Avenue and Addison Street. The massive building project cost approximately $6 million to complete. Opened in September 1934, it was dedicated as the largest high school in the world at that time. The footprint shown in this photo closely matches the school's layout today, though the surrounding area has developed.
