“Students are not objects to be observed”- I couldn’t agree more with this view by @MiddlesexVPHSE and @YUSUPresident in a letter to @johndavidblake. Co-leadership with students is essential to help them ‘get in and get on’ and is a central part of our new @MiddlesexUni 2031 plan

This is the reality for many working-class students. To improve their experiences in HE and support them in 'getting on' you must hear their voices and ask them what tools they require for their progression. No more doing to students. Do with students at the forefront.

Often these jobs are demanding and offer low wages, so at times the hours spent at a part-time job do not financially equate to the students labour. Now they're tired, still financially tight, stressed as a result, but still proceeding to attend lectures and complete assignments.
Duncan Exley@Duncan_Exley

...while maintenance loans / grants remain inadequate (in some places not even covering rent) many students are forced into term-time jobs that rule out participation in CV-boosting extracurricular activities (& eat into study time) (3/3) #SocialMobility #WideningParticipation

Nearly impossible. Systems have been devised in a manner that caters to the needs of middle- and upper-classes. There's a lack of consideration for the working-class, many of whom are parents/carers, first in their family to attend university, working several jobs to survive
Duncan Exley@Duncan_Exley

In many ways, it's hard or impossible to get the full employability-boost of university if you come from a non-privileged background. This piece by @MiddlesexVPHSE & @YUSUPresident addresses part of the problem, BUT... (2/3) wonkhe.com/blogs-sus/an-o… #WideningParticipation

Throwback Thursday to my engagement with #mhTV where I shared my experience of living with Sickle Cell Anaemia. Thank you to @Unite_MHNA for having me and giving me the platform to tell my story. Sickle Cell Anaemia: The 'invisible disability' as real as the oxygen you breathe.

Participated in a great Union Council meeting this evening. I always appreciate opportunities to reflect on the progress I've made thus far and the work still to be done to reach my goals. Accountability is a necessity and the MDX Union Council facilitated that - Thank you all!

You can’t create systems and procedures for people without including the people they’re for in every aspect of the process. In this case the people are students. Hear our voices & proactively act upon our requests. That is our ask. #nomorestrugglingupladdersandfallingdownsnakes
