IMO, If one has the time to play and claims to be a Zelda fan, one should try to play at least all of the 3D or all of the 2D games once, or be planning to.
As a huge Zelda fan, to take your opinion on the series seriously, that's what you do.

Majora's Mask is there if you WANT to try it. You don't have to. But a lot of newer fans will probably want to explore the past games too if they're curious.

Being a fan doesn't mean you need to seek out literally EVERYTHING a franchise or a band or something has to offer.
It's there, it's nice to have, yes. But ultimately, just liking the franchise is enough to be a fan, and it has always been.
