I was scared, desperate, and stupid. A friend showed me his ticket. “Manchester City to win. Sure odds. Double your money.” I looked at the surgery money. Told myself, “Just one game. I’ll return it with profit.” I took it all and played the bet. Manchester City to win. Kickoff was that night. I couldn’t sleep. Kept checking the score. They were winning 2 to 0 at half time. I smiled. Started planning how I’d lie, say aunty sent extra, return the capital. Then the second half started. They conceded one. Then another. 2 to 2. My hands were shaking. I was pacing, praying, sweating. “Just one goal.” 90th minute. Still 2 to 2. Then the other team scored. 3 to 2. Full time. The ticket cut. Manchester City lost. The money was gone. I collapsed on the floor. The surgery money. My brother’s life. Gone to a bet. I cried like a child. Couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t tell anyone. I wanted to run. I knelt down that night. Begged God. “If You save me, I’ll never gamble again.” Morning came. My phone rang. It was my aunty. My heart stopped. She said, “I had a dream. I’m not comfortable. I’m sending the money again.”
