Economist and former NEDA chief Winnie Monsod posed an alternative to suspending excise tax on fuel products: taxing the 50 wealthiest billionaires in the country. Monsod warned that suspending excise taxes would leave the government short on funds for its aid programs, noting that the same failed in 2022 when fuel prices also spiked. She said this would later on hurt, rather than help, the bottom half of Filipinos.
