Lot of political takes today. Here's a non-political political one for you: the only three things that matter are charisma, authenticity, and a candidate's ability to export that charisma to the masses.
Look who's won since I've been alive:
Bush Sr. vs. Dukakis
Clinton vs. Bush Sr.
Clinton vs. Dole
Bush Jr. vs. Gore
Bush Jr. vs. Kerry
Obama vs. McCain
Obama vs. Romney
Trump vs. Clinton
Biden vs. Trump
Trump vs. Harris
You might point to Trump's 2016 win as either confirmation of this theory or a complete rebuttal, depending on your politics.
But with charisma and authenticity, it's more about their absolute value vs. simply having more or less than the other candidate. It's why we like heroes and anti-heroes in fiction, Superman and The Punisher.
In 2016, Hillary was not a charismatic candidate, straight up. And while Trump's version of charisma is basically being a standup roast comic, inspiring any reaction was clearly better than inspiring none, given the fact he won.
Now, to exporting that charisma to the masses, there is one simple rule: the digital game is all that matters anymore.
Obama destroyed everyone at this in '08 and '12, winning by 192 and 126 electoral votes respectively. Since then, it's like Dems completely forgot how to play the digital landscape. That or they're using a playbook that was deprecated years ago and they just don't know it.
In 2024, the rule might as well be, "The candidate that has more TikTok hype edits will win."
But, you have to give the people something to edit! Trump's interview with Joe Rogan on YouTube ALONE has ~46mm views in the last 11 days for a 3hr long podcast. Who knows how many on Spotify and elsewhere, has to be over ~100mm. That's a huge chunk of the US electorate.
And that's just the first-order viewership. Clips, edits, cuts, all secondary and tertiary media created just about that one interview alone are likely in the billions of views.
I'm not saying any of this is a good thing, just that it is what's happening. I find it pretty sad to be honest, no matter what 'side' you're on.
You would hope that, whatever voting decision you make, it's being made for genuinely considered reasons, but I don't think this is the case anymore for most people.
Every single day I see tweets, Reddit posts, etc. from people I respect in some area of their life that are sharing false, inflammatory, low-context, etc. info in another. On both sides of the political spectrum.
They do this mostly to score internet points and get fake status from a follow count going up. But they all think they're doing "the right thing."
If you're on X and you can't admit this place has become an insane echo chamber, you might be one fo them. But if you're on Reddit and can't admit the same thing...you're also one of them.
So there's my take. It's really about the [inherent likability vs. dislikability of a candidate] x [each candidates ability to export that to the masses] and the only way that matters anymore is digital.
