Yoruba traders were moving kola nuts, leather, iron tools, woven cloth, ivory and glass across West Africa centuries before modern commerce existed. The Oyo Empire controlled the trade routes. Yoruba women controlled the markets. The economy was not informal. It was engineered.

@MIKassim One thing I love about the Nupe people despite the massive impact of the Fulani jihad and the establishment of Bida Emirate, is that they have never for once claimed to be Fulani. They absorbed the Islamic reforms and yet stayed proudly Nupe in identity, language, and culture.
