Several of these Locos - both half and full cabs, were shedded at Staveley in the 50s I saw 41779 which still had the Salter safety valves on the dome.

@adipullenLNER I saw this loco several times at Newark, Retford etc. Powerful but apparently prone to derailment in shed areas. Not at speed fortunately. 4-6-4 or 4-6-2-2, depending on your point of view. I always thought of it as a 4-6-4,

@adipullenLNER I remember seeing 44686 and 44687, both impressive performers, not far short of a Jubilee. A very successful black 5 variant. British Caprotti valve gear, I believe, like the later BR standard 5. I understand the ordinary Caprotti black 5s had a rather dubious reputation.
