In Norwegian, there is an equivalent you say AFTER eating food like gochisou sama deshita. Even when you're by yourself, you still feel compelled to say it. It's "takk for maten" it just means "thanks for the food" but it has a deeper feeling -- it stems from a time when the country was poor -- way before it ever discovered oil. Back when the only food you could really get was goat, carrot, potatoes, cabbage, Kohlrabi and whatever else would grow in that climate.
