#Top70AlbumsOfThe70s #52 of 70: Rush - Fly by Night (1975) Prior to one of Rush’s first U.S. tours, original drummer John Rutsey left the band, unwilling to commit to a demanding touring schedule, which was a blessing in disguise, as his replacement, Neil Peart, became one of rock’s most respected drummers and a key creative force. His arrival marked a shift toward more ambitious material on Fly by Night: while the title track and “In the End” echo Led Zeppelin influences, the album is less straightforward than the debut. It features early classics like “Anthem,” the sprawling “By-Tor and the Snow Dog,” which foreshadows future epics, and highlights Peart’s imaginative, often sci-fi–tinged lyricism. Elsewhere, “Making Memories” offers melodic reflection, and “Beneath, Between, & Behind” delivers raw intensity. Though not among Rush’s very best, "Fly by Night" is a pivotal release, signaling the band’s move away from imitation toward a more distinctive and challenging sound.
