All over Australia, you'll find many old workhouses where foreign convicts (many of them Irish) would be kept, such as the Ross Female Factory in Tasmania, pictured below. Did any of your Irish ancestors arrive as convicts?

In places where a single Irish surname was prevalent, families often went by a nickname to distinguish themselves from other families with the same surname. Over time, these nicknames became surnames in their own right. Perhaps you have a "nickname" of your own?
