@francesleach_ Is that when Corbyn failed to defeat May after she ran maybe the worst election campaign in living memory? Oh we still remember.

Please RT to spread awareness. I will be making a generous donation to a Centrist Dad charity which I hope will make at least some amends for the hate crime I committed
Owen Jones@owenjonesjourno

I just want to issue a profuse apology for using the anti-dad slur “centrist dad”. I didn’t know until know this was hate speech against a marginalised community. Whatever I can do to make amends with dads, I will do it. This has been a humbling moment for me.

@elmathud0071 So in 30 odd years of being eligible to vote you have only voted in 2 general elections? Thanks for your contribution to democracy!

@novaramedia Any idea what they cost? I guess it's less than £500m which would imply they are net earners?

There are three common myths about the monarchy: 💷 They bring in tourism money 🗳️ They have no political role 🇺🇸 A UK republic would mean a US-style President All of these are total myths. Even the commonly used figure for royal tourism (£500m) is miniscule.

@RivkahBrown @novaramedia Sounds like he was very politically motivated and knew exactly what he was doing, he gets into an argument with a 13 year old, which in his own words leaves her very upset. Suspension while under investigation seems reasonable.

self flagellation of standing for 24 hrs to publicly walk past a box obviously an important part of the myth of britain+ it’s relationship to royals but fundamentally it’s entirely unnecessary! there are ways of dealing with big crowds of people that do not need a 6 mile queue!

@LauraPidcock I would have thought respecting the dead and the impact it had on those that loved them is universal, across everyone in society.

The norms around societal civility & respectfulness are shaped & reinforced by the ruling class to keep them in positions of power. Adhering to them won’t open up the gateways we need to challenge their dominance, greed & exploitation.

@mattlodder I dont know how old you are but I presume you were here for; Diana's funeral, Prince Philip, the Queen mum... the gold, diamond, platinum Jubilee, all the weddings, the countless trooping of the colour. What part of this dont you recognise? It's been part of our lives forever.

Our new "King" makes servants iron his shoelaces. He makes them dress and undress him. And he makes them squeeze toothpaste on his toothbrush every single morning and evening. The idea that this man can 'look after the country' is ridiculous. He can't even look after himself.

Before the Queen's death, just under a quarter of Brits favoured a Republic. Support was highest amongst young people (31%) and was lowest amongst older voters (13%).

I really don’t think the BBC realise just how much resentment towards the monarchy their insanely sycophantic non-stop coverage will create. Many people are already bored to tears with it, and we’ve got at least 9 more days of ludicrous North Korea-esque fawning from them.

@michaeljswalker The large crowds turning up to see Kate, Harry, William and Megan rather undermines your point.

Is the unsaid thing in all this rolling news coverage that there just aren’t many people turning up at Buckingham Palace? Low angle shots a classic way to make a place look busier than it is.

@OwenJones84 And both had very different personalities which may have impacted on how people mourned. Diana was very tactile, emotionally outgoing, the Queen very reserved. People show their respect accordingly. Again to draw any conclusions from this is very blunt to say the least.

@Mikephillips751 they're two Royals who loomed very large in the public imagination for very different reasons!

With a historian's hat on, it's interesting to note that this isn't anywhere near the scale of the public outpouring of grief which happened when Princess Diana died
Michael Walker@michaeljswalker

BBC hosts keep saying “huge crowds” and “thousand upon thousands” of people are turning up to pay their respects. Why is there always about 20 people in the background? Also these guys have helicopters - show us the crowds if they’re there!

@OwenJones84 How can you possibly try and compare the reaction to the sudden and tragic death of a young lady to someone who has lived a full life, and whose death we have had a chance to mentality prepare for? You are comparing apples with oranges. And ignoring empirical evidence to boot.

@Mikephillips751 A historian would look at lots of different things - from polling to public outpourings of grief following a Royal's death - that how I was trained and to be honest I did ok in my history degree on that basis!

@OwenJones84 As a historian, If you really wanted to know about changing public attitudes you would look at opinion polls, rather than comparing two completely different events.

@Mikephillips751 So here's the thing: I'm going to keep talking about shifting public attitudes towards the monarchy whether you like it or not, and if you don't like it, don't follow me on twitter - it's no skin off your nose.
