TSA flagged nearly 700 million dollars in cash leaving Minneapolis-St. Paul airport in just the last two years, about 343 million in 2024 and 350 million in 2025. That’s more than any other U.S. airport, even the big ones like JFK or LAX, despite MSP being much smaller. It’s mostly carried in suitcases by couriers, often Somali-American, heading overseas, and it’s all declared, so it’s legal on the transport side. But state lawmakers are investigating because a lot of it is suspected to come from fraud schemes in Minnesota’s welfare programs, like child care assistance, then laundered and flown out. Federal authorities are now probing the links to fraud and money laundering. Treasury even lowered the reporting threshold at MSP to catch more of it. It’s been going on for years, but the numbers jumped recently.
