How do you get a football back that you kicked in an NFL game?
I have two of the most important balls that ever left my foot in my possession and I am going to detail how I got the first one. I’ll share the 2011 NFC Championship later. It’s a wild story.
January 20th, 2008. The NFC Championship game vs the Green Bay Packers.
When you are kicking field goals in the NFL, very rarely are you ever thinking about getting the ball back until it’s too late. I have ran down balls after game winners a handful of times in my career.
September 20, 2009: Opening night of the new Dallas Cowboys stadium game winner was one of those times. I felt like having the ball from the first game in the new Cowboys stadium was worth running down.
Back to the NFC Championship in Green Bay. When we are lining up for a kick to put our team in the Super Bowl the last thing you are thinking about is getting the ball back.
We have all seen the video, after we made the kick I just ran off the field because I was sick of being cold and wanted to celebrate with my team in the locker room. Not one thought of getting the ball ever crossed my mind.
After the celebration in the locker room and thawing out, I had a moment where I was like damn, it would have been really cool to have that ball but oh well someone has a nice souvenir.
Got showered up, dressed, do my press conference, and got to spend about 15 mins with friends/family who came to the game by the buses before heading to the airport.
I always rode bus 1, bus 1 was all the vets so it was the lead bus heading out.
The door closed and we started on our way but there was a knock on the door just as we were pulling out and the Bussy (bus driver) opened it and on walks a Green Bay Packers assistant equipment manager with a plastic shopping bag with something in it.
He asks, is Lawrence Tynes on the bus? I always sat in the back with some coaches and teammates. I walked towards the front of the bus to meet the young man and he says “Red” wanted to make sure I got this to you. Said thank you and started making my way back to my seat.
In that plastic shopping bag was the ball we had just kicked to go the Super Bowl. I had the biggest smile on my face. We all passed it around the bus and took turns looking at it on the way to the airport. I remember it like yesterday. Coach Coughlin even wanted to see it. Pros being kids again.
Equipment managers are your best bet to get balls back especially on FG’s as they are standing back there at the bottom of the net to get the “K” balls (specific kicking balls) back in the game.
Who is Red?
Gordon “Red” Batty was the longtime Packers Equipment manager (43 yrs before retiring in 2024). His brother Greg Batty was my equipment manager in the CFL for the Ottawa Renegades.
I got to spend some time with Greg pre game that night as he was in town helping his brother Red for the playoffs. I also got to meet and hang with Red before the game as well. Both are amazing people.
I treat everyone with respect whether the janitor or the owner. I treat everyone the same. I always formed a tight bond with the equipment staffs at every stop in my career. They are the backbone to every team. Greg and I were close and I can’t help but think that Greg sharing our relationship with his brother had something to do with Red going out of his way to make sure I got that football and I am forever grateful to him.
Special night topped off by someone whom I just met 5 hrs earlier going out of his way to get a ball back to an opponent who just beat his team says all you need to know about who Gordon “Red” Batty is as a person.
Thank you Red! 🙏🏻🏈🧀
