@spacepunk @mykola - the opposite" claim is largely exaggerated.
Myk is right though, following up the invite with a specific time/place suggestion has never done me wrong.
English

@spacepunk @mykola I'll be honest i didn't really think much about the specific coffee example when making my post, it was supposed to be more general haha. I'm autistic and have never had issue with inviting nt people out for coffee. I think the "neurotypicals will always think you mean-
English

My people I need you to hear me when I say that this kind of hard-earned wisdom is for you to *integrate* not scoff at!
Ok great they are saying something they don’t mean. This data point can be used to build a bridge or a wall, your choice.
You have agency here!!!!

A lot of autists here are so miserable because instead of hearing things like this then using it to better one’s life and social connections, you all just ignore it and continue to run face first into the wall on repeat
English

@durinpurin @alaskastardust I am giving you my first hand account of it having the chance of making things better, fym "there is no winning" ???????
English

@Mikeysob @alaskastardust they don't want to bc it's so fucking hard and you lose the patterns the second you burn out or change situations anyways. there is no winning
English

@durinpurin @alaskastardust I am autistic. I have spent a long time learning to recognize patterns in allistic communication. It has made my life easier.
It will not be viable for all autistic people, nor will all WANT to do it. But saying it's not possible to learn is really harmful stereotyping.
English

@Mikeysob @alaskastardust you literally cannot just "learn" when someone means they rlly want coffee or not bc the disorder blinds you to the cues that would indicate as such. unless you did masking which would still never cover every detail or situation.
English

@durinpurin @alaskastardust "Autistic people are incapable of learning" Okay sure whatever
English

@alaskastardust "just learn from it" IT IS QUITE LITERALLY THE DISORDER THAT YOU CANNOT LEARN FROM IT
English

@voidpires It is my personal experience because i used to be said autist running into the wall.
Sorry for not giving extensive background context when i made this tweet to my under 150 followers largely consisting of friends who know me?
English

@Mikeysob “A lot of autists here are so miserable because…you all just ignore it and continue to run face first into the wall” so what is that. Is that Your Personal Experience or is that telling other autistic people they’re not doing things right because of how YOU see masking
English

“No you guys don’t understand you’ll be happier and life will be easy if you just STUDY all the social things you don’t know and memorize and perform them forever and ever it’s literally that easy” are we kidding

English

@voidpires Please point to where i said it was easy?
I would not equate learning to recognize patterns in allistic socializing in order to make my life easier, with masking. This is my personal experience, just like you have yours.

@alaskastardust this is so disingenuous; their entire point is that you can LEARN behavioral/social norms even if you don't get them intuitively. refusing to bother to avoid "masking", or encouraging people not to because it's "ableist" contributes to a culture of self-infantilization.

Cleista@CleistaCelestia
Does this phrase not literally mean that???
English

@Geekerchan @Scavvvv Man i don’t know??? ”Do you want to get coffee sometime” followed with action might be a good start? Both other autists and allistics have this weird thing about there always being a right and wrong in every conversation? If you’re unsure if someone is being genuine, just ask?
English

@dilemadelaeriza I am an autistic person. I would not equate learning to recognize patterns in allistic socializing in order to make my life easier, with masking.
English

@MehowBowland @Scavvvv professionally diagnosed in teen years, if you’re so curious
English

@Geekerchan @Scavvvv What a strange thing to say about someone.
A lot of you have such a narrow and infantile view of autistic adults.
English

@Mikeysob I can *know* some of the rules, but also when the time comes I will keep second guessing myself if this was meant literally or not. I can usually see the literal and non-literal interpretation, just never know which is right
English

@Scavvvv Just because something does not ”come naturally” in the traditional sense does not mean it’s impossible to learn.
I studied like i would any language.
I do not think like a neurotypical person, but i can benefit from learning their language and customs
English

@Mikeysob Interesting so do you think some autists have the ability to change how they think based on what’s presented to them, while others perhaps do not?
