My take (though not my original headline) in the I Paper: why Putin won't stop.
"In 2012, Putin reinvented himself as a guardian of “spiritual ties” – not because he believed in them, but as a response to the modernised part of Russian society, which rejected him after he announced his return, and took to the streets in what became known as the Bolotnaya protests. In 2014, he recast himself as restorer of “historic lands” and of Russia’s greatness – again because it proved convenient. An opportunist, he was always in a freefall, carried by the current through a narrowing corridor of options that would eventually leave him with one reliable instrument: violence."
