Fishman ended the Russian edition of “The Successor,” which was published two weeks before the war, on an optimistic note. “Heroes do not die, and neither do values,” he wrote. “The ideals underpinning Nemtsov’s Russia will be in demand at the next turn of history — and they will help ensure that the story has a good ending.” That hopeful coda has been struck from the English edition. “Is this other future still possible?” Fishman writes in a new prologue. “I still believe that today, although I am not sure that I will still be here when it happens.” The New York Times review of "The Successor". nytimes.com/2026/05/02/boo…

Он хотел быстро сместить Зеленского, посадить на его место Медведчука — и поставить Украину под свой контроль. Четыре года спустя: Зеленский по-прежнему в Киеве. Несостоявшийся наместник Украины Медведчук обменен на бойцов Азова и живет в Москве. Число убитых в российской армии оценивается в 400 тысяч человек. Убит или покалечен каждый 25-й российский мужчина в возрасте от 18 до 49 лет. Национальная катастрофа, которой заплачено неясно за что. Возможно, за самое медленное — как уже признано — военное наступление за последние сто лет. Преступная захватническая война, которая ведется как террористическая — с ежедневными бомбардировками мирных городов. Кремль начал сегодняшний — как все понимают, знаменательный — день с публикации пресс-релиза СВР о том, как “Лондон и Париж активно работают над решением вопросов предоставления Киеву ядерного оружия и средства его доставки”. Судя по тому, как к этому сиквелу постановки об украинской “грязной бомбе” осенью 22-го года тут же были подключены вообще все — от сенаторов и Медведева до Юрия Ушакова, который уже передает эту крайне тревожную информацию в Вашингтон, — спецоперация была разработана даже не в СВР, а на самом верху. И Путин как будто между делом ссылаясь на то, что “уже в СМИ пошло” — еще один верный признак тщательной подготовки, — тоже картинно возмущается на коллегии ФСБ, что противник не брезгует никакими средствами. В этой безыскусной оперативной разводке важен не замысел — напугать Трампа (тем более что вряд ли из этого что-то выйдет), — а дата: годовщина начала войны. Годовщина, которую Кремль не только не отмечает: где мероприятия и парадные речи о том, как Россия уже четыре года победно и героически противостоит могущественному врагу? Путин на коллегии ФСБ вместо этого упоминает “сложную международную обстановку”. Но и пытается заглушить специально приуроченной пиар-атакой. Красноречивое свидетельство, что похвастать нечем.

Reading “The Successor”, a chronicle of Russia’s emergence from Soviet communism and its subsequent collapse into dictatorship, you cannot escape an unsettling question. Yeltsin had once wanted the presidency to go to Nemtsov, a preternaturally gifted statesman and a committed, pro-Western believer in capitalism and liberal democracy. 'Successor', published in Russia two weeks before the invasion of Ukraine, is much more than a biography. Translated by Michele A. Berdy, and with an extra chapter dealing with the death of Alexei Navalny, it is a fascinating insider account of Russia’s descent from imitation democracy to fully-fledged tyranny, with Nemtsov’s life as a connecting thread. Fishman, a brilliant reporter who was forced to leave Russia for voicing opposition to the renewed war in Ukraine, makes a powerful argument for the significance of Nemtsov's assassination and his 25-year career of dramatic highs and lows in Russian politics. For anyone who wants to understand how, despite all the hopes for freedom and democracy as Soviet communism was dying in the 1980s, Russia has turned back into one of the world's worst tyrannies, this excellent book is as good a place as any to start. It is less a biography of Nemtsov than the story of modern Russia seen through his subject's eyes.
