Despite losses resulting in criticism of helicopters, it is well-established that air permissiveness is a prerequisite to domain exploitation. Tactical & operational answers exist. By integrating the force mix can multiply effects and manage risks. See my latest on @RUSI_org 👇

The helicopter has been criticised following extraordinary Russian losses in Ukraine, however the benefits of vertical lift are still obvious within the force mix. Read the #RUSICommentary from @MilAvHistory. rusi.org/explore-our-re…

'It is . . . unclear why the UK should divert scarce resources from Europe that would neither be decisive nor influence a mercurial US Administration that does not need them.' writes @MTSavill in the latest #RUSICommentary. rusi.org/explore-our-re…

Worth remembering that in air-to-air, visual does not prevent friendly fire. Plenty of incidents from WW1, WW2 and later at very short distances. Fair to ask questions about deconfliction and engagement decision but a video gives us little context on why this happened.
Black__Bird@Blaxk__Bird

Kuwaiti F-18 🇰🇼 Engaged USAF F-15 🇺🇸 with in the visual range and shot it down. The lack of integration could have been the reason but shooting down a friendly with in visual range is just absurd. What was the pilot thinking? 🤯

@nofear4by41 @RUSI_org If air domain is permissive (it is not) then helicopters could bypass static lines and operate in the deep. They are not beholden to frontline.

@MilAvHistory @RUSI_org It seems they were most effective when attacking UKR forces on the move. But for static lines, they seem very vulnerable.

This strike on storage facilities is an interesting one. Unknown how quickly Venezuelan operators could have readied and coordinated these Buk’s to counter Absolute Resolve. Perhaps indicative of an aim to weaken Venezuelan Russian-based IADS long-term?

📍Catia La Mar, #Venezuela (🇻🇪) We have gotten a close look at some of the destruction at Catia La Mar following Operation Absolute Resolve. U.S. (🇺🇸) assets targeted Venezuelan Buk-M2E air defense systems in storage.

@GuyPlopsky Detail is hard to make out but agree overall shape appears consistent with MH-60 rather than AH-1Z

Before this started, there was no questioning of US military overmatch. Details on resistance, US suppression of Venezuelan defences & helicopter operation would be interesting nevertheless. Permits evaluation of how indicative this was of US capabilities & its signalling value.
Christoph Bergs@MilAvHistory

Footage from helicopters over Venezuela show what appear to be CH-47 Chinooks and MH-60 Black Hawks. Given available pictures, shapes are overall consistent with versions also flown by special operations units. Rocket strike may suggest presence of other types as well.

@MilAvHistory The MH-60 can carry and use rockets. Micheal Durant's book takes about the 160th developing this capability back in the 1990s.

After some delay, it is now confirmed that the decision whether to continue 🇫🇷🇩🇪FCAS or not is delayed. “Contrary to the original plan, a final decision on the continuation of the FCAS project has not yet been made at the end of the year.” hartpunkt.de/entscheidung-z…

@ond144 Given all this debate, what is negotiable and non-negotiable appears very much based on where one sits.

@MilAvHistory Why is the plane always refered to as Franco-German? The Spanish funding and workshare are definitely non-negligible. I presume that the Spanish view is pretty important too.

It is getting to the point where this must be considered a feature of the Franco-German relationship, not a bug…🧐
