Lt Gen (Ret) Vusumuzi Masondo moderated a session marking 21 years since Angola’s first Ombudsman, who stressed that justice in public administration is both a legal duty and a moral imperative for building public trust.

According to the Military Ombud Act of 2012. The Ombud may summon any person to submit an affidavit or affirmed declaration or to appear before him to give evidence or produce any document that has a bearing on the matter before him.

The Military Ombud Lt Gen (Ret) Vusumuzi Masondo today addressed the Army Extended Command Council on the legislation that govern his Office. During his address, Military Ombud expressed concern over the prevalent issues related to grievance procedures within the military.

The Office is proud to participate in the Easter Rand Show 2026, taking place at the Nasrec Showgrounds in Johannesburg, from 02–06 April 2026. This exhibition provides an excellent platform for the Office to engage directly with the public.

The Office concluded its Limpopo Outreach Programme Roadshow by visiting the AFB Hoedspruit and 5 Special Forces Regiment Phalaborwa.

Members of the 7 SAI Battalion in Phalaborwa were informed that an ombud investigation is not a criminal investigation but a non-adversarial administrative inquiry to ensure due process has been observed and that the Office was not created to replace the channels of command.

Public Awareness campaign aimed at educating the public about process of lodging a complaint with the Office. The public can approach the Office when they are not happy with the conduct of the members of SANDF when they are on duty.

The Military Ombud conducted its Outreach Programme roadshow at the Makhado Air Force Base today, aimed at raising awareness among stakeholders and educate SANDF members on the office's mandate.

Members of J TAC HQ Limpopo and Area Military Health Limpopo were advised that all complaints with the Office must be submitted in writing. Upon receiving a complaint, the Office will assess jurisdiction and notify the complainant in writing if they will take the case.

Members of the Limpopo Signal Unit were informed that complaints to the Military Ombud must be lodged within 180 days. Late submissions require an application for condonation, which the Ombud will consider based on the reasons for the late submission.

As part of its Outreach Programme, the Office today visited the uniformed members of Mapungubwe Regiment in Polokwane. It was at this Outreach, that the current serving members of the SANDF members were informed about powers and functions of the Military Ombud.

The Office has commenced its Outreach Programme in Limpopo by conducting a visit to the Army Support Base in Polokwane, offering a comprehensive overview of its mandate. The Office will also visit Makhado, Thohoyandou, Phalaborwa and Hoedspruit to engage the uniformed members.

The Ombud may not investigate a complaint relating to: A manner in which a Military Judge performs his or her functions in his or her capacity as a Judge; A matter that is pending before a military/civilian Court; A matter on which a decision has been taken by a military court.

The Office of the #MilitaryOmbud is in Thohoyandou raising awareness about their services ahead of the official annual Armed Forces Day at the weekend. Chief Director Operations, Themba Mthethwa, says members of the public heard about how they can report complaints about soldiers' behavior, such as excessive force, and receive fairness. IMS

#MilitaryOmbud He says soldiers themselves are also coming forward with concerns about their conditions of service, and the Ombud is listening to these from unfair treatment to benefits, as no concern is too small. Mthethwa says the public is encouraged to reach out if they feel their rights have been violated and the Office of the Military Ombud is available to help them. IMS

Military Ombud Strategic Plan is underway to discuss how complaints resolutions can be expedited and ensure the necessary flexibility for the outreach programme to respond to the State of the Nation Address (SONA).
