Sigh..where do I start from? I had someone DM me a couple of hours ago telling me that I have no business telling adults not to gamble. No, I don't, but I can warn our people about the dangers of sports betting. So I am going to lay this out. I am not an expert, but when I did my computer science degree, part of my course was statistics and probability. My lecturer was an experienced bookmaker, so I have a good idea of how odds work. Let me lay out a few insights on how betting companies work. 1. The house always wins: What does this mean. The betting company always has the house edge (also called margin, vig, or hold). This edge or margin is the percentage of every Kwacha bet that the betting house expects to keep in the long run. So let me get into the numbers (I love numbers). Lets use a 10% house edge, this means that for every K10 bet, the betting house expects to keep K1 after paying winners. 2. Winning consistently against the betting companies is possible but you have to be good at Expected Value (EV)math and below is that one line formula EV=(Probability of winning)×(Net profit if you win)+(Probability of losing)×(Net loss if you lose). Why does EV matter? A +EV makes money over time. A -EV loses you money even if you sometimes hit a big parlay For every Zambian that in involved sports betting, you have to lose an average of K20 to win K1. Anyone who wants to dispute this can provide their statements of their wins and losses. I can tell you now that no sports better will dispute this. If you know anyone who claims they are winning in their sports bets, ask them to show you their win/loss statement. They won't show it to you because it will show that they have lost more than they have won. The reality is you will always lose more than you win because the betting companies will always have the edge over you. The betting companies rely on that dopamine hit you get whenever you have a win to continue betting. Do you know what happens when you get good at your EV maths and develop an edge (you become a Sharp) over a betting company, they restrict your betting or close your account. So if you are not restricted in your betting, you a betting company's money making machine!!
