This tweet about Shuri in Marvel Tokon over T'Challa seems to have caused quite a stir so let me just clear a few things up because I do not wish to start a flame war with people when they're excited over a character.
Firstly, i'll hold two L's. In all my years of reading Marvel comics, going to conventions, being close with dudes in the UK MvC crowd, having Marvel trivia nights or comic book podcast, I have never once heard a single person clamour for Shuri to show up in a fighting game. Not once. Me saying that "not a soul wants Shuri over T'Challa" was clearly ignorance, as proven by Twitter and Shuri's very loud and apparent fan base. To me, this would have been no different than making this post about Jane Foster if shes chosen over Thor, but I don't know what everybody likes so thats on me. I should know better considering I seem to be the only person that likes Devil May Cry 2 and Sonic 06. The other L is my typo. Typing "grown" instead of "groan" is an embarrassing state of affairs and unfollowing me on that alone is valid.
Secondly, the point of them adding less known characters into the roster is valid, but I don't think it is for Shuri. Shuri isn't in the same boat as Robbie, Magik or Danger. She was the star of a major Marvel motion picture. She is simply less popular than T'Challa globally even though she has box office representation because people like her less. Robbie, Magik and Danger are just less known. Big difference. That said, clearly twitter feels differently, so thats fine.
Thirdly, people forget that everyone plays characters for different reasons in fighting games. Some people see them as functions and archetypes and thats a lot of the reasoning when push back is given for her inclusion. I don't choose characters for that reason. I choose them for personal attachment reasons, for example; I love the old school Shaw Brothers Martial Arts films so I chose Feng Wei in Tekken. I grew up reading Black Adam comics so when he was announced for Injustice, I said thats my guy. I hear people's excitement for her purely from a functions stand point, but that doesn't cut it for me (and thats fine. We can't all get what we want), so for those of you asking if I will play her because she is just a reskin anyway (she's not but lets go with that), the answer is no. She's not T'Challa. WAIT WAIT.. before you type your 47383rd bot response of "cry more", its totally fine. I'll play a different character, i'm just saying lol.
Fourth, the weird people that see me disliking a character as a crash out, being overly serious, sexist, or not a reader of Marvel comics; go outside. Every fighting game has a roster of characters and on that roster YOU will inevitably dislike some characters. Thats typically how it works. This is just one that I am not too fond of. Its not because she's a woman (cos i'd prefer Silk over Miles, so that arguments out), its not because she's black (otherwise why would I want T'Challa in the first place?) and so on. You have to stop with these low IQ points. Its hard to distinguish bots from real people.
At the end of the day, I will still buy Tokon cos I think it looks like a great game. One character not being in won't stop that for me. I see some people saying that he might get in later. Great, I don't deal in maybe's, I deal in what I see.
When I saw her on stream, I didn't crash out I just said "oh, thats lame" and kept it moving like every single one of you has done during someone's character trailer unless you like every single character on every single roster (you don't, don't lie). Some of you really dislike it when people express opinions that don't align with your own. You call into question a person's entire hobby because they don't like the same thing as you. You need to grow up. Its an opinion about a game and its characters lol.
Having said all of that, I know some Tik Tok brain will just say "nOt REadIng All Dat" or some kind of insult. Anyways, BIG UP QUEEN SHURI... 🫡
