Some data science fun: where do you think The Mandalorian and Grogu will be?

@MoviesThatMaher Yes... but note that this was on 𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵. he didn't make SW to sell toys. SW products sold merch when they were good. So the point of M&G being successful because it will profit from merch sales is reversing the logic.

@Minimalmentat Lucas was the one that first made owning merchandise rights a very lucrative business

Addendum: It’s really funny to hear the Filoni Thrawn energy in these posts.

Hahahaha So you are acknowledging that people are telling you need to factor in marketing and revenue splits. And you are telling us to ignore the same standards applied to all other movies… Just because your movie doesn’t meet that criteria… because it doesn’t have to? 🤷🏻‍♂️
Tatooine Sons@TatooineSons

The standard (just shut up about the marketing budget) is to judge a film against its production budget on opening weekend. You can flood the replies with commentary on marketing cost and theater chain take, and that doesn’t change a thing. This film is a box office success.

Your idea of “success” is from a fan perspective: “i’m just happy to see SW back, and people are watching.” But the Studio needs this movie to prove there is still viability in the franchise, and in their approach. (2/2)

TFA made 500+ million on its opening weekend. Rogue One made 290 million. “Disappointment” is from the perspective of profit/loss ratios. SW didn’t come back to theatres to eke out 140+ million on opening weekend. (1/2)

One thing that annoys me is when a big IP movie makes crazy money in its opening weekend & it’s framed as a disappointment. If a Star Wars spin-off movie makes ONE-HUNDRED & TWO MILLION BUCKS in 4 days, that’s a huge success. Regardless of how it compares. Full stop.

@BlossomAnalysis For me, SW is truly cooked if this happens. More mindless “fun”, more Grogu, don’t touch the Skywalkers / main timeline The franchise is in a closed loop

I seriously hope Disney doesn’t think this is the direction they should be taking Star Wars, but I don’t have high hopes

Addendum 3: “pointless” and “fun” can both be true. But marketing “pointless fun” to normies is such an insult to normies.

Addendum 2: interesting though, because between shills selling the movie hard and critics tanking it, who actually has real influence among general audiences? Can repeat viewings by hardcore fans give the movie legs? That will reveal the true size of the existing fanbase!

A sincere, but desperate need to believe the movie is doing well. Between critics describing the movie as between “pointless” and just “fun”, and between the fan accounts believing the movie will break even vs. the trades reporting a poor showing for a SW movie, which is true?
Tatooine Sons@TatooineSons

Overperformed and made back its production budget on opening weekend = box office success (Add to it that if this would have been a D+ season it would have cost approximately the same and brought in negligible new D+ subscribers which mean a financial loss.)

And why I find parts of the fanbase constantly infantilising, and calling for the infantilising of SW so frustrating. (5/5)

Into my 30s, having read the Dune saga and watched the Villeneuve films, what do you think my expectations for SW will be now? Maybe like Denis himself, I had (w/o articulating fully), a desire for SW to grow with my own sensibilities. variety.com/2024/film/news… (4/5)
