Councils are Ceding Sovereignty to Iwi – This is Treason
There is a major power shift happening under our noses — power moving from elected representatives to unelected and unaccountable iwi and hapū appointees.
Hobson’s Pledge has warned for years that Mana Whakahono ā Rohe agreements (MWRs) are undermining local democracy. Captured councils and iwi are rushing them through before the Government’s RMA reforms.
Right now, the Far North District Council is prioritising multiple MWRs with five iwi and even one hapū — while trying to avoid public consultation. The RMA refers to iwi authorities, not hapū.
Brave whistleblower Councillor Davina Smolders has exposed that the Far North agreement explicitly cedes sovereignty. Clause 2.0 states:
"The Parties recognise the significance for Te Rūnanga-A-Iwi-Õ-Ngāpuhi of He Whakaputanga o Te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni as a declaration of the status of Māori as the sovereign people of Aotearoa/New Zealand.”
Local councils should not be ceding our nation’s sovereignty. This is a massive constitutional issue.
Enough is enough.
Kiwis are easygoing, but now is the time to act.
We’re hearing this is being pushed nationwide — iwi urged to lock in these deals before RMA changes. Once signed, they’ll be nearly impossible to undo.
This is coming to a council near you. We can stop this brazen power grab, but we need to work together.
Minister Chris Bishop must amend the RMA replacement Bills to end these MWRs and make clear they won’t stand, no matter when signed. Elected power belongs to elected officials — no one else.
Minister Simon Watts (Local Government) also needs to act to halt the shift from elected to unelected.
We’re fighting back by publishing ads in newspapers up and down the country, since mainstream media won’t cover it.
These agreements entrench iwi governance, not just co-governance — race-based preferential treatment, conflicts of interest, and control over planning, assets, and ratepayer money. Roads, footpaths, and water are taking a backseat.
Far North, the agreements are being pushed through committees stacked with unelected iwi/hapū reps negotiating them. Massive conflict of interest.
This is the deliberate replacement of democracy with unelected iwi elites — while ordinary Kiwis are shut out.
I’m disgusted and determined to alert every New Zealander. If this is happening in your area (Far North, Taupō, Taranaki, Bay of Plenty, etc.), spread the word. Talk to family and neighbours.
Democracy only works when we use our voice. Let’s use ours — loudly.
This is your money, your democracy, your future being signed away without consent.
Will you support me? Get behind the resistance.
He iwi tahi tātou.
We are one people.
