Il grande direttore d’orchestra Christoph von Dohnányi si è spento il 6 settembre a Monaco di Baviera, alla vigilia del suo compleanno. La notizia è stata resa pubblica quarantotto ore dopo, proprio il giorno nel quale avrebbe compiuto 96 anni. Figura centrale della direzione orchestrale del secondo dopoguerra, è stato fra i più giovani a ricoprire il ruolo di direttore musicale generale in un teatro tedesco. Ha fatto la storia di numerosi teatri e festival internazionali: dal Festival di Salisburgo che lo ha ricordato con bandiere a lutto, alla Cleveland Orchestra del quale è stato direttore musicale dal 1984 al 2002, alla Philharmonia Orchestra di Londra che lo ha nominato direttore onorario a vita dopo il suo incarico come direttore principale nel 2008. È stato anche direttore musicale dell’Opera di Stato di Amburgo e chief conductor della NDR Symphony Orchestra. Dohnányi era amato per le sue letture rigorose, fedeli ai compositori, e per la sua profondità musicale: celebre per il suo Brahms, ma anche convinto promotore della musica del Novecento. Ci sarebbe troppo da dire. Possiamo forse riassumere la sua identità artistica in una sua frase presa da un’intervista del 1989 a Newsday: “Sono molto egoista, in realtà. Voglio dirigere tutto. Non voglio specializzarmi nella musica contemporanea, ma non potrei vivere con me stesso se non la comprendessi.” // ENG // The great conductor Christoph von Dohnányi passed away on 6th September in Munich, on the eve of his birthday. The news was made public forty-eight hours later, on the very day he would have turned 96. A central figure in orchestral conducting in the post-war era, he was among the youngest ever to hold the position of general music director at a German theatre. He made history at numerous international theatres and festivals: from the Salzburg Festival which honoured his memory with flags flown at half-mast, to the Cleveland Orchestra where he served as music director from 1984 to 2002, to the London Philharmonia Orchestra which named him Honorary Conductor for Life after his tenure as principal conductor, which concluded in 2008. He was also music director of the Hamburg State Opera and chief conductor of the NDR Symphony Orchestra. Dohnányi was admired for his precise, faithful interpretations and his profound musical insight, celebrated for his Brahms, yet also a passionate advocate of 20th-century music. There is far too much to say but, perhaps, his artistic essence is best captured in his own words, from a 1989 interview with Newsday: “I want to conduct everything. Out today for @DGclassics, the #Tosca that opened the new season at @santa_cecilia. Starring our @EleonoraBuratto in the title role, @TenorTetelman as Cavaradossi and @TezierLudovic as Scarpia, this recording is already garnering significant praise from international critics.

Playing the glad game today (Pollyanna, anyone?) and a blossomed Magnolia seemed like a good place to start.
