I believe teachers are not entertainers. A teacher’s duty is to teach pupils their subjects & teach them to become better versions of themselves: harder working, more polite etc. When pupils learn lots & become better people they feel successful & fulfilled. This is true joy. 1/

To balance the vastly positive comments, I take issue with describing this type of teaching as 'joyful'. Joyful means causing great pleasure & happiness. I see no smiles or outward signs of positive emotions. Neutral/even bored facial expressions & robotic tones. Not joy. 🧵

So, I've just spent a bit of time looking into the debate on IHT and farming. I... got a shock. First, a note: I have a friend who runs a family farm. In his view, the whole thing is a something and nothing. 🧵

To cap off their first half term spent at HWS, the Year 7s enjoyed a fantastic evening at their Halloween Disco last night. They danced the night away and enjoyed bonding with their new friends!

I’m finding it increasingly concerning that English is being either macro focused to a set of insurmountable, somewhat nebulous claims or alternatively, micro focused to an overprescribed set of texts, content and processes. A 🧵:

Sometimes there are gaps in conversation, and you can feel a little awkward … In these situations, may I recommend you say: “The nights are drawing in!” You will certainly elicit a response from your conversation partner with this factual but vaguely ominous statement!

@MissMNeary I feel like it makes us look really evasive when we say it doesn't exist 😂 I swear colleagues think I'm making it up

You know what I increasingly think is mad about English Lit GCSE? The absolute lack of guiding content. Have you seen other subject specifications? They often have a list of 'these are the things to teach the students'. Eng Lit: here's a list of books to choose from

@Miff__ @JoBullen1 Just vibes 😂 completely agree!!! Can only mark Ques 5 if you read a lot a lot a lot and then makes it sooo tricky for students who don’t to internalise what ‘convincing’ or ‘compelling’ really means

@MissMNeary @JoBullen1 I’d say the context & literary terminology is the most vague, it’s bizarre and makes it really hard to mark. The lang is worse though: q5 and no specific content required in terms of typical features of form and genre just vibes of whether it meets the brief & uses good vocab….

Enjoyed Taylor Swift’s dancer worrying that he might be culturally appropriating tartan.

Why is ‘tax’ such a dirty word. It literally pays for our health care, social care, welfare state, police, safety, local services, education, roads, transport, military. We all rely on these to live and survive.

In my humble opinion, the disappointing thing about this #ITVDebate format is that it gives no space for proper exploration of ideas. It promotes soundbites over analysis, superficial responses over explanation. Not sure it gets us very far at a time of such national crisis.
