The freedom of wooden blocks and loose parts is fantastic in developing spatial relationships and mental rotations.
Endless opportunities that not only build on our mathematical skills but, allow opportunities for the children to share their narrative.

Using our knowledge of tens and estimation, our year one team had great fun putting these skills in to practice, finding the length of the lines using a meter stick.
@Pawlettprimary
Cheese straws today, fairy cakes yesterday.
Measuring and then finding 2 equal parts, exploring heavier and lighter.
It is so important to highlight maths in our day to day and the children were fantastic at recognising the different concepts.

Is there a better way to reinforce your mathematical concepts of partitioning than making your own pizzas!
We applied are knowledge whilst practicing important life skills.

Even our youngest friends had the most wonderful time during positive noticing day.
The children worked very hard to record qualities about their friends, swapping and sharing with fantastic effort.
We all felt wonderful!

Year one were exploring greater than and less than with giant playing cards today. We built numbers and used rulers as a visual cue to aid our understanding.
We were so excited to put our learning into practice with this one!

Today, in pairs, the children presented their retelling of ‘Can’t You Sleep Little Bear’ to the class.
The retelling shows beautiful teamwork, listening, responding and key phrases that represent the structure of the story.
What a fantastic job!

As a school, we attended St John the Baptist church today for a Harvest service.
We were able to share this with friends and family and took the time to reflect and give thanks.
What a wonderfully engaging service.
Thank you for having us!

English has been busy for our year 1 team this week.
We sequenced the story and decided what happened in the begining, middle and end.
Then we wrote our own sentences to retell the story in the correct order.
What phenomenal work.
Can you guess the story?!

In Heron we ensure that if the children display an interest in something new and independently takes their learning elsewhere, we then build on it then and the next day.
Offering opportunities to engage and explore, in a way that hooks them in!

What happens when we mix the prime colours…
Magic is what happens!
What a pallet of colour we have explored this afternoon, whilst learning to love making marks in different ways.
We can tell you the colours we can make when we mix the prime colours together.
@Pawlettprimary
One picture, a thousand words.
This makes my heart so happy, communication is key.
Our new reception friends beginning their @voice21oracy journey.
The smiles, the laughter, the listening, the responding!

Our mornings in Heron class look like this…
Fine motor challenges, painting, maths, marks, sounds, and calming music.
All before the register!
@Pawlettprimary
Year 1 have been partitioning 5.
Today we used numicon to find the missing part, we then implemented our learning by writing our own number sentences to match.
Well done year 1.
@Pawlettprimary
Let’s make marks!
We have made marks to music, while chatting to each other, quietly on our own, giant marks, little marks, on our tummy, standing up… can we make marks upside down?
Watch this space and see!
