My mom passed Friday in Joburg and my dad, sister & I drove down to kuTsembeyi the next day. It was the most heartwarming thing to arrive to a full house of family, church & community members.

He was gunned down outside his home in a municipal car park on the 16 August 2016, shortly after attending a municipal meeting. Before his death, Duma had reportedly opened a case of intimidation.Duma was looking into the illegal appointment of senior managers and directors who lacked the necessary educational requirements or expertise for their roles. Misuse of municipal funds investigations flagged specific irregular spending, such as a R150,000 bill at a local store for personal items (like cooking oil and baked beans) and R90,000 spent on 1,000 “party t shirts”. Two primary suspects were arrested in connection with the murder.A key witness in the case, Ayanda Mhlongo (some reports name Bonginkosi Shoyisa), who was prepared to testify about the corruption and the hit on Duma, was later murdered while in witness protection.

The late Moses Tshake (55)🕊️🕊️ was a chief auditor for the Free State Department of Agriculture and Rural Development who became a prominent whistleblower . Tshake was kidnapped and brutally assaulted in a hijacking on the 22 February 2013. He was reportedly tortured with some reports suggesting he was towed behind his own car and spent three months in a Bloemfontein hospital before succumbing to his injuries on the 11 May 2013. He is best known for investigating high profile corruption cases, most notably the controversial Vrede Dairy Project (linked to the Gupta family) and the Gariep Fish Hatchery project. Despite his death occurring over a decade ago,there have been no arrests, and the investigation has largely stalled leading to public outcry and claims of a “culture of fear”within the provincial government.

The late Bonke Meyile (34) 🕊️🕊️was a senior auditor for the Auditor General of South Africa (AGSA) who died while in police custody at the Gonubie Police Station in East London in May 2025. A post mortem revealed a police officer belt around his neck. His family and supporters have disputed the suicide claim, noting that Meyile was not wearing a belt when he was arrested and that inmates are typically required to remove such item. #JusticeForBonkeMeyile
