Research Associate Professor Dr. Krzysztof Rechowicz is volunteering at the 2025 @VADigiMaritime Digital Ship Challenge. He is helping with the Maritime Maintenance Challenge, where students work together to complete a ship repair challenge, showcasing their problem-solving and technical skills. As part of the challenge, students use @Sphero Programming to simulate debris removal in real-world maritime scenarios, highlighting the intersection of technology, innovation, and hands-on problem-solving in the industry. It’s been a great day collaborating with the talented Hampton Roads students competing in today’s event. MISSION FIRST, PEOPLE ALWAYS!

Last month, we hosted our first Mission Engineering and Integration Workshop. A great success, the workshop, led by Jim Moreland Jr, Ph.D., brought together a diverse group of participants from @ODU, Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division Dam Neck Activity, Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), and Newport News Shipyard to dive deep into the principles of Mission Engineering. The 3-day event concluded with participants presenting innovative solutions to complex mission challenges. Their creativity, dedication, diversity of thought, and teamwork were truly inspiring! We are implementing the valuable feedback/comments received and will be hosting more workshops in the near future, including a Mission Engineering Competency Model Workshop, so stay tuned for more information. Today was the final day of our Mission Engineering and Integration workshop. It was a unique learning experience as there are only a few places, resources, and people who teach Mission Engineering. The workshop started with the introduction of key Mission Engineering concepts, followed by hands-on learning in multidisciplinary teams. The participants concluded the workshop by applying the knowledge acquired during the last three days to generate a mission thread. We hope that the skills acquired during the workshop will make the participants Mission Engineering ambassadors in their organizations. The @ODU Center for Mission Engineering is hosting a three-day Mission Engineering and Integration Training Workshop led by Dr. James Moreland, the godfather of Mission Engineering. Over the next three days, participants will learn about the foundational concepts of Mission Engineering, such as mission threads, ways to measure mission success, the importance of integration and interoperability, and more. They will also work in teams to apply this new knowledge to create products for different Mission Engineering scenarios. This workshop is an excellent chance for participants to sharpen their skills and collaborate with experts in the field.
