Today's the day! The #MissionToPsyche spacecraft is now on final approach to Mars. Real-time updates to follow.
NASA JPL@NASAJPL

NASA’s #MissionToPsyche – on its way to explore a rare, metal-rich asteroid – is about to get a speed boost from Mars. 🚀🏁 On May 15, spacecraft will harness the Red Planet’s gravitational pull as a slingshot to increase its speed and adjust its trajectory. 1/2

NASA's @MissionToPsyche is approaching Mars for a gravity assist. It's also a chance to get images of the Red Planet. "...if...we can do important testing and calibration of the science instruments, that would be the icing on the cake," said Psyche PI and SSL Director @ltelkins.

This is not an eclipse, but an even more rare sight: a crescent Mars as seen by NASA’s #MissionToPsyche spacecraft. The unprocessed image — taken by Psyche today — shows the night side of Mars as the spacecraft approaches the Red Planet for a flyby on May 15. The glowing crescent is sunlight reflected from the day side of the planet's surface, as well as sunlight passing through its atmosphere. The irregularities in the crescent are likely caused by surface features, and dust and clouds in the atmosphere.  1/2

Several @NASA and @ESA orbiters and rovers at Mars will be making observations during the Psyche flyby. Comparing these measurements will help the team calibrate their instruments, and support planning for future spacecraft approaching Mars. More: go.nasa.gov/4tsCLPQ

Great balls of fire! ☄️ We've seen several fireballs streak across the sky recently. What are they, and what's the difference between a meteoroid, a meteor, and a meteorite? Get the facts with this handy guide: science.nasa.gov/solar-system/m…

#MeteorSighting: A fireball was observed by witnesses in the western U.S. on Sunday night, March 22. The meteor was first spotted above the California town of Chowchilla. It traveled south at 35,000 mph before disintegrating above Calflax. This fireball does not appear to be related to other recent bright meteors. 🔗 go.nasa.gov/4btbPd1 Eyewitness accounts supplied by the American Meteor Society
