Plant medicine saved my life... Marijuana and natural kratom gave me hope when I felt like I had none left. They became tools that helped me leave opioids behind, rebuild my life, be present for my children, go back to college, and become the person I always wanted to be. I know I'm not the only one. I've talked to veterans with PTSD, chronic pain patients, people in recovery, and so many others who say these plants helped them when nothing else seemed to work. Their stories deserve to be heard, not dismissed. I'm not saying marijuana or kratom are right for everyone. Nothing is. But I am saying we should stop acting like every person who benefits from plant medicine is doing something wrong. NBA player Brandon Clarke was charged with "trafficking" in Arkansas for possessing kratom. Not fentanyl. Not heroin. Kratom. A plant used by millions of Americans. Just weeks later, Clarke tragically passed away in Los Angeles at only 29 years old. And almost immediately, some people began connecting the two stories as if the cause of death had already been determined. Finding mitragynine in a deceased person's blood does not automatically mean kratom caused the death. This is one of the biggest misunderstandings when people read forensic reports. Medical examiners frequently find: Fentanyl Methamphetamine Benzodiazepines Alcohol Prescription medications Multiple substances together in the same cases where mitragynine is detected. Previous forensic studies have repeatedly found that most kratom-associated deaths involve other drugs.

Funny how every time a tragic story hits the news, the headline is "kratom." Not obesity. Not alcohol. Not prescription medications. Not the countless substances that actually dominate overdose statistics. Just kratom. If we're going to talk about restrictions, let's start with restrictions on bad reporting.
