Mercator was used because it's very efficient for charting sea travel.

@BALUCIAGA She's right that it causes distortion, but she's incorrect in stating that it was done purposefully. The distortion is a product of representing a round globe on a flat 2D map, other projections have similar or different warping. There is no way to do this without warping.
