President Russell M. Nelson will be known for the scores of new temples, accelerating the growth of the Church, centering the gospel in the home, his prophetic words and his love for Jesus Christ, but for Ann and me, one thing touched us most personally and profoundly: his kindness.

The shooting of Charlie Kirk has shocked and sickened me and my family. We extend our prayers and profound sorrow to Charlie and his family, many friends and followers. Another senseless act of violence appalls us.

I am a true-blue member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Ann and I attend sacrament meeting every Sunday and enjoy service in the temple. We love our church and the callings we have received in our home ward. A poorly sourced article in the @sltrib that said otherwise is laughable. By the way, if you’d like to learn more about my religion, I’d be happy to help you meet with our missionaries—including some of my grandchildren!

The world has been blessed by the voice and example of Pope Francis. May Pope Leo XIV likewise draw upon the best of humankind and lead toward the Savior, Jesus Christ.

Heavy heart with the passing of my friend and colleague, Mia Love. Her energy, enthusiasm and wit made her a stand-out member of Congress. Her faith and fortitude made her a model for me and for countless others. We will dearly miss you, Mia.

All know that a strong America is the best ally of peace—the world’s avaricious dictators of Russia, China, North Korea and Iran are hesitant to invade and brutalize in the face of 1) American strength and 2) American resolve. Our tepid response to Russia’s invasion of Georgia and Crimea surely contributed to Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine. American strength is greatest when we have friends that stand with us; we must not let economic squabbles fray the bonds of our alliances. American resolve is greatest when we stand with the victims of oppression and invasion. After Russia invaded Ukraine with hundreds of tanks and hundreds of thousands of troops, America - together with Europe - rallied to give Ukraine the weapons and aid to defend itself. Three years later, Russia continues its brutal assault. We must not let personal squabbles weaken our resolve to stand with the freedom fighters and to oppose the authoritarian aggressors. Lasting peace will only be achieved if America demonstrates strength and resolve and if Ukraine is certain that it will not be invaded again. Anything short of that would elicit only temporary celebration; it would open the door to global conflicts that we may be unable to contain.

A man of character and deep faith, Jimmy Carter will be remembered as more than a president. He leaves behind a legacy of service to others, love of family, and devotion to country and democracy. He is home again, reunited with his beloved wife, Rosalynn.

As I close this chapter in the U.S. Senate, I wish every Utahn the very best in their years ahead. I’m confident that the future is bright, and that our state will continue to grow and thrive. It’s been a profound honor to serve you—thank you for giving me the opportunity.
