As war raged in 1943, Ray J. Kaufmann knew what he had to do—and wouldn’t let age get in the way.
“He felt it was his duty,” recalled his son Lenny.
At 17, Ray J. enlisted in the U.S. Army, lying about his age. He carried a mezuzah from his mother in a small metal case around his neck.
His unit was stationed on the Maginot Line near Metz, France. One night, he was asked to escort a sick soldier to the rear.
“After about 10 minutes en route, I heard a tingling… I opened my jacket—my dog tag chain and mezuzah were the source. I touched them. They had been damaged. Then I passed out.”
Ray had been hit in the chest by shrapnel from a German 88. In the hospital, he was told it had missed his heart by a fraction of an inch. “I believe the shrapnel was deflected by my mezuzah. I was lucky to be alive.”
Ray came home a decorated veteran—Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge. But his greatest pride was his family and their Jewish faith.
“Dad and Mom made sure all six of us were brought up in a very Jewish home,” said his son Bruce.
Ray discouraged his kids from enlisting. When his son Avrum asked why, Ray said: “It was different then. There was something that had to get done, so I got up and did it.”
Sixty years after Ray took off his uniform, something again had to get done, and another Kaufmann put the uniform on. Chaim Baruch Kaufmann, Ray J.’s grandson, is a captain in one of the IDF Paratroopers reservist divisions. What he does is classified, but he continues in the family tradition: proud of their Yiddishkeit, not eager and gung-ho, but ready to serve and risk life and limb for their country and the Jewish People.

The words and the stories of Torah are but its clothing; the guidance within them is its body.
And as with a body, within that guidance breathes a soul that gives life to whoever follows it.
And within that soul breathes a deeper, transcendental soul, the soul of the soul: G‑d Himself within His Torah.
Grasp the clothes alone, and you are like the student who hears the words but not the thoughts. Grasp straight for the soul—or even the body—and you will come up with nothing. They are not graspable; they are G‑dly wisdom, and you are a created being.
Instead, examine those words and those stories; turn them again and again. As words from the heart are one with the heart, every word of these stories is Torah. As fine clothes and jewelry bring out the beauty of their wearer, so these words and stories will open your eyes to the G‑dliness within them.
This is what Torah is meant to achieve: that we should discover G‑d in simple stories. Because once we will find Him there, we will find Him in the simple stories of our own lives as well.

During the latest russian attack on Ukraine city Odesa, the Third Jewish Cemetery—the city’s oldest cemetery—was once again damaged
Many headstones and monuments were damaged or destroyed. And this is already the third time this sacred place has been struck… It is deeply painful to see how war reaches even those places where people are meant to rest in eternal peace
We pray for Odesa, for Ukraine, and that no more missiles or drones will destroy either the lives of the living or the memory of those who are no longer with us!

Good morning and chag sameach for the holiday of Shavuot tonight! The holiday of Shavuot is one rife with meaning and purpose for our daily lives. Afterall, the Torah is our guidebook to navigating the world, in all of its mundane and consternating messiness. (Indeed, that is the very premise of this newsletter: To explore how the Torah can speak to the vicissitudes of modern life.
There’s a fascinating discussion in the Talmud about Moses’s experience receiving the Torah on High which speaks to the very cutting edge of innovation.
