Sound advice, even if idiosyncratically translated.

@misorganized It's true, there's a shocking amount of lore, history and language in Macbeth for instance. Reading one of Eleanor Parker's books, I was very pleased to learn the true story of the minor character Lennox.

Life isn’t long enough to do all the things I want to do. I want to memorize all the works of Shakespeare, read Beowulf in Old English, become an expert in folklore & etymology, study history, play the recorder. There are an infinite number of things to learn, & time is so short

@TinyWriterLaura We read the Hobbit in primary school, and the shared area between two classrooms was turned into Mirkwood. A vivid memory more than 40 years later (and LOTR is my favourite book to this day).

i’ve never once forgotten the experience of sitting in a corner of the sofa in my parent’s living room and actually having to catch my breath because Mirkwood was so thick with strange heat and shadows and Bilbo & the dwarves were lost. reading that book was magic

i read the hobbit when i was 7 & yeah i definitely wasn’t pronouncing a lot of the names right, but i’ve never forgotten that the passage in Mirkwood was the first time i realised words could conjure something physical. i FELT like i couldn’t breathe in that close heat & darkness

Someone once told me that The Hobbit is too difficult a book for a child of twelve to read. The Hobbit, famously a children’s book. Fewer and fewer people are able to read in part because we continue to lower expectations. Kids in the 1940s were reading Defoe & Dickens.

There is probably a Japanese word for ‘the feeling of boundless joy at having submitted one’s tax return tempered by the absolute horror of confronting, in black and white, the fact that you effectively make 3p per hour’.

Ok, so with hindsight it might have been better to label things like the kettle, the broadband hub, my drill, cutlery…
