When art, science and #AI meet @rijksmuseum: digital reconstruction by @erdmann gives new insights into Rembrandt's #NightWatch and what the painting looked like before it was cropped. Now on view for three months! #OperationNightWatch

I designed a sequence of three artificial neural networks to make a computer reconstruction of the missing parts of the Night Watch from a small copy that was made before it was cut down. The result is now hanging around the painting for the next three months @rijksmuseum!

I'll give an overview of the many components needed to capture, process, and assemble a 925 000 px × 775 000 px (5 µm res.) photo of Rembrandt's Night Watch at the @rijksmuseum. Afterward I'll be available to answer questions on the live Q&A Zoom session.

I'm excited to give a keynote at this year's @pycon about the challenging process of making an insanely high-resolution 717 gigapixel (!) photo of Rembrandt's Night Watch at the Rijksmuseum, and the key role played by Python and the scientific Python stack throughout the process.
