These are the words of Umar Khalid from inside Tihar Jail.
Almost 6 years. No trial. Still waiting.
A historian. A student leader. A political prisoner.
This is not justice. This is punishment without conviction.

Arrested in September 2020 under UAPA in the “larger conspiracy” case of the Delhi riots.
Six years later, the trial has barely moved.
Bail denied by trial court, High Court, and Supreme Court.
The process itself has become the punishment.
When the state can lock someone away for this long without proving guilt, the Constitution is bleeding.

While the system keeps him caged, Umar Khalid’s PhD has finally become a book — Fractured Communities.
A serious work of history on Adivasi lives, power, and resistance under colonial rule.
Written while facing sedition charges, rustication, and later this long incarceration.
Even from jail, he chose scholarship over silence.
That itself is resistance.

They called Gandhi “anti-national” and threw him in prison.
Today they call Umar Khalid the same and throw away the key.
Different era. Same method.
Brand the dissenter. Stretch the case. Let time do the rest.
The spirit of Satyagraha does not die. It takes punar janam in every generation that refuses to bow.

Umar is not a symbol.
He is a 38-year-old man who has spent the best years of his life in a cell while the case against him crawls.
His body and mind have paid the price.
His family waits.
The country looks away.
Silence from large parts of the political class and civil society only emboldens this.

A democracy is not measured by how it treats its supporters.
It is measured by how it treats those it fears.
Umar Khalid’s continued incarceration without trial is a mirror held up to the state of our justice system.
Free him.
Or at least give him a fair and speedy trial.
Justice delayed this long is not delayed justice.
It is denial.

Stand with Umar Khalid.
Not because you agree with every word he ever said.
But because no one should spend six years in prison without facing trial.
History will remember who stayed silent.
And who refused to.
