The Howard County Council unanimously approved a temporary ban on data centers Monday. Vice Chair Christiana Rigby introduced legislation prohibiting the construction of new data center projects in the county until more information on their impact is analyzed. It’s especially needed, she said, because the county hasn’t updated its zoning regulations governing data processing and telecommunications since 1993. Current regulations reflect a “smaller-scale, lower-intensity form of development” that differs from modern data centers, according to the legislation.
