Ethan Neumann, a 27-year-old PhD candidate in my lab, devoted himself to studying #fibrolamellar carcinoma, the cancer that claimed his life last week. Please support his father’s effort to establish an endowed research fellowship in Ethan’s name ⬇️ gofundme.com/f/ethan-neuman…

My father is turning 85 tomorrow. We just got off the phone. I’m on my way to Hong Kong and of course excited to be at a meeting but somehow now wish I went to Berlin instead. He just told me about his memories from the siege of Leningrad in 1942/43, the starvation and horrific death of 1.5 million in the city, mass fire bombings and the smell of gun powder and sound of air raids. And how it was American egg powder and canned beef that he remembers eating after being finally evacuated across the frozen Lake Ladoga. He was just 3 years old. Glad he made it out alive. Thankful to be here myself.

Each time I spend a sleepless night worrying about a complex upcoming case, or hours in the procedure room trying to save a patient in the middle of the night, then watching 5 sub-specialist teams in the ICU or surgeons in the OR do battle for the patient’s life, then the code, with 20 people in the room, all at million dollar cost, just to save or extend a single life….each time I then return from the world of medicine into the real world to find folks on @x wishing each other death or celebrating deaths of some people they hate. One really has to wonder how on earth the two worlds can be so different? Humans are capable of unspeakable evil and at the same time of incredible goodness, all depending on their setting and situation. Leaders create settings where goodness prevails. But it’s essential to also recognize that evil is truly among us, in all its banality.

Hey radiologists, The Intl Osteoporosis Foundation has this one simple trick to help you better care for your patients with osteoporosis. If you see a fracture, CALL IT A FRACTURE, not just a combination of non-fracture words like compression deformity, height loss, wedging, etc

I have been getting questions regarding safety of CT after this recently published paper in JAMA & here you can find @RadiologyACR response. Medical decisions should always weigh risks against benefits using solid evidence. This article exaggerates the risks of CT, relying on flawed models and overlooking the substantial clinical value CT provides. CT’s role in healthcare should be grounded in science, not speculation.
American College of Radiology@RadiologyACR

Americans should not forgo necessary, life-saving medical imaging – including CT scans – and should continue to discuss the benefits and risks of these exams with their healthcare providers. See our statement on the JAMA CT scan radiation study: bit.ly/42gSkjr
