One of the tragic effects of dispensationalism on American Christianity has been a speculative spirit with regard to the last things. While the New Testament authors recognized that they were living in the last days and that the consummation of history had already begun in the cross of Christ, dispensationalism has sought that consummation elsewhere. It has looked almost completely to the future and away from the cross. The Apostles saw themselves in the midst of a present eschatological drama, but dispensationalism has sought apocalyptic drama outside the text of the New Testament, ever around the next historical corner. The clarity and comfort of New Testament eschatology has been transformed into confusion and fear by a speculative hermeneutic which insists on reading the text in our context, instead of its own.
