Absolutely.
Now let's pretend they passed labor laws in Florida to triple the cost of labour. And rezoned land for environmental 6 reasons. Then changed pesticide and herbicide rules. Prices skyrocket.
But China had none of that. So the imports start. Finally, the cheaper Chinese oranges are all the exist. Because of "free trade".
You see a few "non free" parts of this?
If the gov't is going to hamstring the industry, why shouldn't it deal with the implications of that?
English

@Modster99 @CanadianPolling Free trade is a centuries old activity. It allows us to get what we need and want in the most efficient, cost-effective way possible. Why build thousands of acres of greenhouses to grow oranges when we can import them from Florida and use the land for a more profitable endeavour?

Trump threatens amended Canada tariffs because of the wildfire smoke:
English

@Modster99 @CanadianPolling Geology. Free trade is about comparative advantage. It's not an adversarial practice. Coffee be grown in California but not at the same yields as Brazil. Is it unfair that we have a natural abundance of potash or LNG?

English

@JLBroomes @CanadianPolling You forgot the carbon tax.
But when did I argue for that?
English

@Modster99 @CanadianPolling 🇨🇦 interprovincial trade barriers have held our economy back for decades. Supply management drives food inflation. Do you really want more of that? Government managed commerce's track record is beyond abysmal.

English

@JLBroomes @CanadianPolling A. Works for who? To achieve what?
B. I'm not arguing that CAN/US trade be ended. Or tariffed. Only that it will hurt Canada far, far more.
C. I'm against gov't driven cost increases and political interference. For the most part. But there are reasons.
English

@Modster99 @CanadianPolling Free trade and free markets work. China doesn't invalidate that. Ending 🇨🇦🇺🇸 trade doesn't counter China. Neither do government-driven cost increases and political interference.
English

@JLBroomes @CanadianPolling Why does that graphite come from low income countries?
Environmental, wage, red tape, etc.
It's not free trade when you handcuff your competitiveness.
English

@Modster99 @CanadianPolling No one economy can produce everything it needs/wants: that's why free trade exists. For example, Russia mines potash but our proximity, economic integration, and stability allow us to do so more reliably and efficiently. Rent-seeking isn't a substitute for free trade and commerce

@Modster99 @LadyGriz How is he going to get more business after Candace shows up and destroys the place? She's a psychopath, so she will probably level the place. Remodel won't be possible, he will have to rebuild from the ground up... she will almost certainly rent heavy machinery. Not hand tools.
English

@JLBroomes @CanadianPolling No one has claimed the US can produce everything.
English

@JLBroomes @CanadianPolling Not a fan of random infographics on the internet.
English

@Modster99 @CanadianPolling Free trade, reining in spending, and technology will the US economy - and everyone else's. No one's economic problems stems from it. It's governments constraining the market that hurts economies - as Canadians we know this better than many.

English

@JLBroomes @CanadianPolling And to be clear, it was large companies that benefited the most
English

@JLBroomes @CanadianPolling I was on board with the idea that China could be brought into the pressnt via trade.
It has proven to have been a disaster. Yes, people benefit from cheaper goods, but at what total cost?
English

I read it. It states it may be under or over estimating.
Bottom line, this is a US play to drive manufacturing to the US. Part of that article states "if trade levels remain the same". They won't. This will cause a shift to building/buying in the US. And efficiently/eating costs in Canada.
It may hurt individual people and businesses in the US initially (but the tariffs are taken in by time US govt), long term it will likely help the US economy.
English

@Modster99 @CanadianPolling Yes and no. It's 🇺🇸 businesses that pay the tariffs of an avg 10% - 13%; hundreds have sued along with 24 states. Consumers are beginning to feel the squeeze too. A permanent system of universal tariffs isn't sustainable even for the US.

Seeing a lot of fabricated/Ai posts of apparent @realDonaldTrump tweets.
I see them on Facebook
And people just eating them up, not even asking if it’s true, nor even looking to see if it is.
This is dangerous
And this is why influencers and media should be held accountable when posting fabricated content.
