Andoni Iraola will be forgiven for wondering what exactly he's stepped into when Liverpool begin their season at Newcastle on August 23. Memories are still raw from the Alexander Isak transfer saga last summer, and emotions are sure to be running high in a hostile stadium. It doesn't get much easier after that with the visit of Forest, now under Oliver Glasner. Forest have won on their last two trips to Anfield and Glasner led Crystal Palace to three wins over Liverpool last season. Ipswich away looks more appealing but perhaps not under the lights on a Friday night, while there will be a sense of the unknown for the home game against Alvaro Arbeloa's Fulham before the complete opposite - at least for Iraola - at Bournemouth. There's still plenty of time in the transfer window for Liverpool to bolster their resources, but the loss of so much experience from the squad will be felt in those early weeks. Andoni Iraola met a number of his players at the AXA today. Harvey Elliott, Jeremy Jacquet and James McConnell reported for preparatory work. Stefan Bajcetic, Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike, Wataru Endo and Giovanni Leoni doing rehab. Pre-season starts properly next week.

@SherekhanKlopp Forward signings need to be capable of performing an effective press. Without that the midfield will be trying to cover wide spaces, which then exposes the defence. The absence of a functioning press was a huge issue this season. Need forwards fit, fast, settled and with stamina.

Going to be an interesting transfer window for #LFC. Phase two of the long rebuild. With the mounting departures, the squad cannot simply absorb every departure and carry on as normal. At some point, these stop becoming individual stories and start becoming a structural challenge. The club is not just shopping for a winger. They are likely looking at RB, CB, CM, RW and LW. That’s before you get into depth, availability, durability and succession planning. The scale of the rebuild could end up being much larger than many anticipate. So then it becomes a question of priority and how far the money goes, and where? Liverpool has to decide what they are actually backing. Arne Slot is fundamentally an attacking coach. His football is built around controlling games through possession, pressure and chance creation. Whilst the defence clearly needs attention, there is a trade-off. If you’re backing an attacking coach, do you give him more defenders or more attackers? Every pound spent on the back line is a pound not spent improving the final third. Goals win you games. The most rational outcome is clarity. Know what the team is trying to be. Know where the minutes are coming from. Know which profiles are missing. Then build towards that vision rather than chasing the loudest problem of the week. Loud is not effective. Clubs that navigate transition best are rarely the ones making the most moves. They’re the ones making the right moves consistently.
