You're being a little dishonest with this post. In fact, your subsequent posts, where you listed all the extracurricular activities you engaged in to justify your grades, only reinforce that impression. They suggest that if you had graduated with a First Class, your opinion would probably have been very different. Even if I assume, without conceding, that you're being completely sincere, the timing of this conversation is still wrong. Extremely wrong. A First Class in law is not something that falls into anyone's lap. A Double First is even more demanding. It takes years of consistency, sacrifice, discipline and resilience. People who achieve it have earned every right to celebrate it for as long and in whatever manner they deem fit. There will always be time to discuss whether grades matter in the long run, but immediately after people attain such a significant milestone is hardly the time to diminish it. Grades in law serve two major purposes. The first is personal. A First Class is a lifelong personal achievement. It represents years of hard work, perseverance and excellence. That satisfaction never expires. Whether you eventually practise law, move into business, academia or another profession entirely, no one can take that achievement away from you. The second is professional. Grades create opportunities, especially at the beginning of a career. They open doors to interviews, scholarships, clerkships and jobs that might not ordinarily be available to someone with lower grades. But this second purpose is transient. A candidate with a First Class or Double First may secure certain opportunities immediately, while someone with a 2:2 may have to take a different route. However, with experience, exceptional work ethic and consistently delivering quality work, those differences begin to disappear. That is why top law firms routinely hire lawyers with lower grades but impressive experience. Four or five years into practice, employers are asking different questions. What have you done? What value do you bring? What is your track record? At that stage, experience often matters far more than grades. However, even when the employment advantage fades, the personal value of academic excellence remains forever. That is precisely why you often see high achievers who did not attain the grade they wanted in law school immediately pursue another academic qualification and strive for a distinction. It is not because they need another certificate to 'survive'. It is because excellence means something deeply personal to them. It is a way of proving to themselves, and sometimes to the world, that they are capable of performing at the highest level. Law school was simply one chapter, not the final verdict on their ability. So yes, grades are not everything. They eventually become less important in professional life. But that does not make them meaningless. And certainly does not mean people should be discouraged from celebrating an achievement that required extraordinary effort to attain.
