🎵🎻This excerpt from Jean Sibelius's (1865-1957) Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43, captures one of the most intense emotional highs and lows in the symphony.
Although Sibelius's Symphony in D minor, Op. 47, remains widely recognized, this symphony is a large orchestral work performed over approximately 45 minutes. Composed around 1901-1902, it is often associated with the historical context of Finland during the period under Russian imperial rule, although the composer did not give it a specific program. The initial ideas for the work were developed during Sibelius's time in Italy, contributing to its distinctive sound.
This performance, featuring hr-Sinfonieorchester and conducted by Susanna Mälkki, was recorded live at Alte Oper Frankfurt on May 17, 2019.
Mälkki (born 1968), initially trained as a cellist, has built an international career conducting both modern symphonies and orchestral symphonies. She has held positions such as Guest Orchestral Director of the Gulbenkian Orchestra (2013–2017) and Principal Orchestra Director of the Helsingin Philharmonic Orchestra (2016–2023).
