Monte Meyer
@MonteMeyer
Married, father of two - grandfather to even more. I love fishing, training dogs and trying to grow things in my orchard. Oh yeah, a pastor in the LCMS.

@becomelutheran Nope - it's not a style issue at all. I worked at a district capacity for some time working with pastors, and you are seeing things I did not generally see. Our pastors are not formed nor trained to reach out to their community - they are trained to take care of their church.
English

@MonteMeyer I couldn't say with authority that's not already happening. Every Lutheran pastor I've met or asked seem very invested in Gospel/community. If you think "connecting" involves being more evangelical and less Lutheran on Sunday morning then we will have to agreed to disagree.
English

If you have a blog, X account, or podcast devoted to blackpilling people on the LCMS then this will be frustrating for you. Despite what you hear online there is cause for hope and enthusiasm in the LCMS

@LutheranAnswers There is a really terrific resource out there called "SOS" Substitute Organist Service. churchmusicsolutions.com. It's terrific music and a teenager with an iPad can help deliver the liturgy beautifully. Plus - it's really reasonable.

@real401jk @elonmusk when they solve that battery issue in the cold - look out - I think it will be an even bigger game changer.
English

@MarkWerling5 I lived across the street from Bethlehem when I was in seminary
English

@MarkWerling5 Where’s the old “Dorm D - the Charismatic Dorm”? 😂
English

I stopped by the Lutheran seminary today in Fort Wayne. The buildings are named after great church leaders. #LCMS

English

@chris_paavola I love Palm Sunday. I just use the Palm Sunday readings and let it stand on its own.
English

@chris_paavola Either that or they are really intent on Acts 1:8...
English

@Lex_Lutheran @DrJordanBCooper @becomelutheran Things have switched from the primacy of the Word and doctrine - to including Liturgy in this at a similar level. It's very evident esp. among the new graduates.
English

@DrJordanBCooper @becomelutheran Agreed.
Nobody will directly state it …
But the sentiment is definitly expressed & shown
English

I've yet to hear from a pro-liturgy Lutheran that thinks anything other than this. "Both/and" is the confessional (as opposed to missional) position.
William Weedon@WmWeedon
@DrJordanBCooper Amen. As Loehe said, better to have the pure doctrine of the Gospel than the most splendid liturgy without it; but it needn’t be this or that. It can and ought be both. But first things first: the Gospel!
English

@TheDonStein See, I'm out of the loop on this one. I'll take your word for it - but I've only really witnessed it in Reformed circles - but even that is here in the twitterverse.
English

@MonteMeyer If only it were. Unfortunately, many of those boys have handlers who are pastors.
English

We told you so.
We’ve been telling you so.
There is work to do in the LCMS.
See you at Convention.

Responses to Stephen Wolfe saying he isn't on board with Michael Spangler in wanting a "protestant Hitler"

@TrumpsHurricane This is not that big of an issue. Relax and stop tearing your hair out.
English

@ChadHartmanShow This breaks my heart. I’m glad you had a chance to visit either him.

Talked to Tom and Kathryn today. Tom’s spirit was tremendous. Realizes the challenge he has and was enjoying his afternoon. No one has touched Tom’s success in radio in Minnesota. Friend since 86. A determined individual, to say the least. Only the best. Defy Alzheimer’s Tom!
Thomas Barnard@TomBarnardOG
Jesus I just realized I didn’t mention I have Alzheimer’s.
English

@Lex_Lutheran IMO there was a definite shift in what constitutes confessional Lutheranism shortly after Dr. Preus was removed as president from CTSFW. I wonder if he kept the hyper-liturgical elements at bay.
English

@becomelutheran Wow - style over substance. Knock me over with a feather...
English

@becomelutheran @lutheranpeasant I don’t think there’s an either or. Scripture says “do the work of an evangelist”. 2 Tim 4. And genuine Lutheranism is more about the Word than it is about your vestments.
English

@MonteMeyer @lutheranpeasant You can make a confessional and historical argument that they have abandoned Lutheranism. I believe a pastor should be interested in the community around him, but neglecting that is lesser than starving your flock from genuine Lutheranism when you've sworn an oath to give it
English

The title says it all. My entire family of 8 cannot wait to leave my job, sell our home, leave our church we love, and move to Fort Wayne, Indiana and be completely immersed and shaped by this process. Sincerely.

English

@lutheranpeasant @becomelutheran And you know what he’s dead on correct. You may not like their style, but his assessment is right there are many of us who do not want the graduate because they are not formed to connect to their community with the gospel.
English

@becomelutheran @MonteMeyer Ex: KoK. Their pastor just about lost his mind when the Synod made the rules more restrictive.
English

@becomelutheran @lutheranpeasant I disagree. But even if you’re correct, it’s not a gross over generalization that the men we are forming for pastoral ministry in the LCMS are not very interested in connecting to their community with the gospel.
English

@MonteMeyer @lutheranpeasant Alternate routes are also a way to perpetuate and legitimize abandoning Lutheran identity/liturgy/doctrine and embrace a business/Evangelical style. I'm open to hearing ideas but the loudest voices currently seem problematic to say the least
